- Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, finance, business or public administration, or a closely related field.
- At least three (3) years of increasingly responsible professional accounting experience.
- Including one (1) year of lead experience, preferably in a governmental or public agency setting.
- Require someone who has prior government accounting experience with high energy and budget experience.
Do you have several years of work experience as an accountant working in a government agency? A local city in Sonoma County is in need of a temporary accountant to backfill one of their positions in the Finance Department. We are ideally looking for someone with prior accounting in a government setting, however, willing to take someone from the private sector. This will last about 3 months, but could extend. Depending on your experience and qualifications you could earn up to $48.87/hour.
Ideal candidate will be comfortable with performing the full range of routine and complex departmental accounting and record-keeping programs under minimal supervision. Responsibilities require the use of tact, discretion, and independent judgment. Successful performance of the work requires thorough knowledge of governmental accounting practices and procedures, fund accounting, and fiscal management. This class is distinguished from the Accounting Supervisor in that the latter is responsible for more complex and higher-level accounting functions and exercises supervision over the Accountant classification.
Essential on the job responsibilities:
- Monitors approved budget allocations, revenues and expenditures; prepares periodic reports and recommends budget adjustments as necessary.
- Plans and executes performance audits and attention engagements, and prepares audit documentation with Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards.
- Provides responsible professional and technical assistance in the administration and implementation of the City’s financial, auditing, and accounting programs.
- Monitors expenditures, revenues, and budget allocations to determine the City’s financial status.
- Prepares custom reports, graphs, and schedules and adjusts as needed; provides analysis of available funds upon request.
- Prepares journal entries and reconciles general ledger and subsidiary accounts related to postings from payroll, accounts payable, cash receipts, and accounts receivable; prepares monthly financial statements, including distributing monthly revenue and expenditure reports to departments; prepares numerous monthly financial reports.
